Alexandria Gazette (Alexandria, D.C.) February 19, 1896 State Senator John James Brooke Bond, a Calvert county, Md., died at Annapolis last night of pneumonia. He was fifty-four years old and was a lifelong democrat. When the war broke out Mr. Bond went south and fought on the Confederate side throughout the conflict. By the death of Senator Bond neither party has a constitutional majority in the upper house of Maryland legislature, the vote standing thirteen democrats to twelve republicans. President Bruce will immediately issue a warrant to the sheriff of Calvert county for a special election to choose a successor to Mr. Bond.
