Robert Donnell Bone was born on 8 April 1832 in Wilson County Tennessee to John Bone and Levicey Donnell (McMinn) Bone [later Hill]. His father died circa 1838 and his mother remarried. Between 1841 and 1842, his family migrated to Texas.
Thus, Robert Donnell Bone went to Texas, riding much of the way muleback, when
he was 9 years old. Because of the harsh treatment of his step-father, he ran away
when he was about fourteen to live with his elder sister, Asenath, who had married
John Winstead Paine on February 6, 1846. Within a short time Robert's three younger
brothers and sister had left the Hill home and were living with the Paines in
With the encouragement of his sister and brother-in-law, Robert rode a horse back to Tennessee in 1854 where he attended University of Nashville Medical School, graduating in 1858.[2] He returned to Texas, where he began his practice in the town of Douglass.
That same year, he married Griselda Minerva Burk on 15 December 1858 in Douglass, Nacogdoches Co., Texas.[3]
In the 1860 census it states that Robert and his wife Griselda were living in Douglas Texas Nacogdoches County. It lists his occupation as a doctor. Also living with them was their daughter Watson.
During the Civil War, he served as assistant surgeon in Col. Overton Young's Regiment, 12th Texas Volunteer infantry.[2]
In the 1870 census it states that Robert and his wife Griselda were living in Rusk, Texas Cherokee County. It lists his occupation as a doctor. Also living with them were their children Winstead, Jessie, Bettie and Herschel. In the 1880 census it states that Robert and his wife Griselda were living in Larissa Texas Cherokee County. It lists his occupation as a doctor. Also living with them were their children Winstead, Jessie, Bettie, Herschel, Nevie, James and John. In the 1900 census it states that Griselda was a widow living in Larissa Texas Cherokee County. Also living with her were her children Nevie and Robert.
Robert died on 24 February 1892 in Mount Selman, Cherokee Co., Texas and was buried at Larissa Cemetery in Mount Selman.[4]
