Biography

Sarah Bone was born at Southampton in 1856.[1] She was the daughter of William Bone and Eliza Smith.

The family were lodging with Sarah's sister Jane Howell and her family at the Westgate Tower, Portsmouth, at the 1861 census. William was working as a customs officer. The children present were William aged 20, Henry 18, Charlotte 16, Agnes 14, Samuel 12, Edward 8, and Sarah 5.[2]

In 1871 Sarah was aged 15 and attending school. Her father William was recorded as being superannuated from customs and working as a fishmonger at Portsea Island. Also present were her mother, Eliza, Edward (18) also a fishmonger, and William or Eliza's niece Elizabeth Smith (11) from Greenwick, Kent.[3]
