Biography

Samuel Newton Bone was born on 8 March 1834 in Wilson Co., Tennessee to John Houston "Jack" Bone and Levicey Donnell (McMinn) Bone. His father died circa 1838 and his mother remarried A. A. Hill. Between 1841 and 1842, his family migrated to Texas.[1] His step-father was abusive and one by one the Bone children began living with older sister Asenath Paine and her husband John Winstead Paine.[2] [3]

He married Martha Melvine Vernon on 12 January 1859 in Nacogdoces Co., Texas.[4] Together they became the parents of Dora Eta Bone and Levicey Armistead (Bone) Ewing.

Samuel enlisted in the CSA on 1 September 1861[5] in Co. H, 4th Texas Cavalry.[6]

When he returned from the war, their family grew with the births of Emma Gertrude (Bone) Hart, Zeffie Louise (Bone) Webster, John Vernon Bone, Carrie A. (Bone) Bigham, Dr. Robert Lee Bone, and Samuel Floyd Bone. When their parents died, Samuel and Martha took in orphans Martha L. Park, Bettie Park, and Harriet L. Park.

Samuel passed away on 2 December 1887 in Nacogdoches Co., Texas and was buried in the Douglass Cemetery in Douglass, Nacogdoches Co., Texas.[7]
