Sarah Jane Bonine, known affectionately as "Jane," was born on April 11, 1865, just as the US Civil War was ending, in Athens, McMinn County, Tennessee, USA. Her parents were John Bonine and his wife Nancy Caroline (Rue) Bonine. [1]
On the 1880 US Census, "Jane" Bonine was recorded as 15 years old, single, living with her parents and 7 siblings, ages 11 months to 20 years old, on their parents' farm in District 13, McMinn County, Tennessee, USA. The Brock family was recorded on the same Census page. [2]
Jane Bonine married John Henry Brock, b: 1857 in Tennessee, USA. They married on August 12, 1882, in McMinn County, Tennessee. The couple first lived in McMinn County, Tennessee, where they were recorded on the June 1900 US Census. They moved to McLennan County, Texas around 1909.
On the June 1900 US Census, Sarah J. Brock was recorded as 33 years old, married, and living with her husband and children in District 4 of McMinn County, Tennessee, USA: [3]
The 1900 Census further reported that the couple had been married for 18 years (m: 1882) and that Sarah Jane Brock had bore 9 children, of whom 8 were living in June 1900. Her mother, Nancy C. Bonine, a widow, had bore 12 children, only 5 of whom were still living in June 1900. Nancy was born in Kentucky; her father was from Tennessee and her mother from Kentucky, according to the Census report. Matilda Bonine was 21 years old and Single in June 1900.
On the June 1910 US Census, "Sarah Brock," age 44 was recorded as married and living with her husband, John Brock, age 59, and 7 children (5 sons, 2 daughters) in Riesel, McLennan County, Texas, USA: [4]
The 1910 Census also added that the couple had been married for 26 years [sic = 28 years]. Sarah (Bonine) Brock declared she had bore 12 children of whom 8 were still living in June 1910. Seven of these were living on their parents' farm in Riesel Twp., McLennan County, Texas in 1910. Their oldest son, William Brock, b: 8 Sep 1884, was married and living next door with his wife, Minnie, and 2-year-old daughter, Ida Brock.
The January 1920 US Census found John and Sarah Brock still living on their family farm in Riesel Twp., McLennan County, Texas. The enumerator misspelled John's name as "James Brock" but kept his wife's name as "Sarah Brock". Although "James" was listed as 70 years old, somehow magically Sarah didn't age, as she was described as 45 (not 54, her real age in January 1920). Only their 2 youngest children: Edna, age 15; and Aubrey, age 11, were still living at home although 2 older married sons: William, now 36, and Roy, now 19, lived with their families on either side of them and no doubt helped with farm duties. Two grandsons: Liddiard: age 5, and J. W.: age 4, lived with their grandparents. [5]
Ten years later, on the June 1930 US Census, John Brock was again named "John" but this time he was still called just 70 years old (instead of his real age of 73 if born in Feb. 1857); Sarah was now her right age of 65 years old. Their 23-year-old son, Aubrey, was still living with them, along with 8 of their Brock grand-children: 5 boys and 3 girls, ranging in age from 17 down to 4 years old. They were the minor children of Sarah & John's oldest son, William Brock & his wife Minnie, who had both died in the Autumn of 1926. [6] [7]
John Henry Brock died on his farm in McLennan County, Texas, on August 6, 1938. He was 81 years old. John was buried at the New Hope Baptist Cemetery, Riesel, McLennan County, Texas, USA. [8] His wife survived his passing. Sarah Jane (Bonine) Brock died on December 12, 1942 on the farm in McLennan County and was buried next to her husband at the Hope Baptist Cemetery in Riesel.[9]
