Biography

Manford Bonine is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

Manford W. Bonine was born on 27 May 1883 on his family's farm in Jackson Township, Anderson County, Kansas, USA. He was the only son of John Wesley Bonine and Mary Wilmerth Culbertson. On the 1900 US Census (the 1890 Census was accidentally destroyed and not available), John Wesley Bonine, age 44, was recorded as a Farmer, living in Jackson Township, Anderson County, Kansas, USA. He was Head of Household, married, living with his wife. The Census enumerated all 6 of their children, including their 17-year-old son, Manford W. Bonine, still living with them on the farm. The 1900 US Census also recorded that he and his wife had been married for 19 years and that his wife, Mary Bonine, had bore 7 children, 6 of whom were still alive in 1900.[2]

On 12 September 1918, Manford W. Bonine, 35 years old: b: 27 May 1883, registered with the US Army during World War I. He declared himself married to "Cora Belle Bonine," and living on their farm in Garnett Township, Anderson County, Kansas. Manford & Cora Bonine had had 3 more children since January 1920: Elizabeth Bonine, age 9 in 1930; son Ratliff Bonine, 5, and Ethie Bonine, 3 yrs., 2 months. [8]

The April 1940 US Census recorded that Manford & Cora Bonine, now 56 and 52 years old, were still living in their own home in the city of Erie, Erie Township, Neosho County, Kansas, USA. Only their 3 youngest children were still living with them, along with a 3-year-old granddaughter, Beatrice Bonine, b: 1933. She was Clifford & Ida's oldest child.[9] Manford Bonine's 83-year-old, father, widower John Wesley Bonine, Sr., had moved in with them before 1935. Manford Bonine was still working as Erie's "Night Watchman". Cora now had no occupation.[10]
