John was born in Hamilton, Scotland after his parents had moved from County Tyrone. He moved to Galdonagh, County Donegal as a child.

He married Grace Devenney in 1926 and they had one son. John worked as a postman. He died in Colehill in 1957 and is buried in Newtowncunningham with his wife.
