Geert Boomgaard was baptized on 23 September 1788 in the Martini Church in Groningen. He served in the 33rd Light Infantry Regiment of Napoleon's Grande Armée, and was awarded the Saint Helena Medal. He married twice: in 1818 and 1831. He was a captain on a boat, and retired in 1850. He had 12 children, born when he was in his thirties and forties. He died at an age of at least 110 years, 4 months, and 11 days (only his baptism date is known, not his date of birth), making him the world's first fully verified supercentenarian. He outlived each of his 12 children by at least a decade, except possibly Abel, whose date of death is unknown. None of the other 11 lived beyond the age of 56.
