Biography

Thomas Boone, born 18 April and baptized 13 May 1730 at St. George, Hanover Square, London, was the son of Charles Boone and Mary Garth. [1] He was educated at Eton and entered Trinity College, Cambridge University in 1745/6 at age 15.[2]

Career and Property

Boone had connections to the province of South Carolina, both through his grandmother Elizabeth Colleton and his uncle Joseph Boone (d. 1734). Having no children, Joseph Boone left his plantations in South Carolina to his wife Ann for life, then to Charles and Thomas Boone, sons of his brother Charles by his second wife.[3] Ann Boone died in 1751, and in 1752 Thomas Boone traveled to South Carolina to take possession of the properties for himself and his brother.[4] He remained in South Carolina until about May 1754, when he returned to England.[5]

Thomas Boone was appointed governor of New Jersey on 14 November 1759, arriving there in May 1760. He served in that position until March 1761.[6]

On 14 April 1761 he was appointed governor of South Carolina and arrived there on 22 December 1761, direct from New Jersey. His term as governor was a turbulent one, as he was involved in a dispute with the Commons House of Assembly over election law. In the end, the House refused to do business with him, and he left for England in May 1764. He never returned to South Carolina, although he was technically still governor until 1765.[7] Back in England, Boone was appointed Commission of Customs in 1769, a position he held until 1805.

Although he took no part in the American Revolution, Boone's properties in South Carolina were confiscated by the state in 1782 and sold at auction. He filed a claim with the American Loyalist Claims Commission for his losses, including land and slaves at Pon Pon Plantation on the Edisto River (which he and his brother had inherited from Joseph Boone and which his brother had deeded to him) and Mepshoo Plantation (which he had inherited from Margaret Colleton in 1779).[8]

Marriage and Family

When Thomas Boone left South Carolina in May 1784, he apparently took with him Sarah, daughter of Thomas Tattnall and Elizabeth Barnwell and wife of Samuel Peronneau.[9] When Samuel Peronneau wrote his Will on 20 February 1767 in South Carolina, he said that his wife Sarah "has eloped from her said husband."[10]Following Peronneau's death in 1768, Sarah Peronneau of St. George parish, London, widow of Samuel Peronneau, filed a power of attorney in order to claim property owed her from her marriage settlement. Thomas Boone was a witness to the document.[11] Thomas Boone and Sarah Peronneau were subsequently married on 25 May 1771 at St. Anne Soho in London.[12]They had children:

  • Lt. Col. Thomas Boone (d. 1798 age 30)[13]
  • Sarah Boone (m. John Smith, d. 1794 age 21) [13]
  • Elizabeth Boone (living 1812)

Death

Thomas Boone wrote his Will on 16 May 1805, with codicils on 25 May 1805, 5 October 1809, and 28 May 1812. He was living at Lee Place in the county of Kent, a property that his brother Charles Boone had inherited from their uncle Thomas Boone (d. 1749). He asks to be buried at Godstone, Surrey, near his children Lt. Col. Boone and Sarah Smith. He left his estate to his wife Sarah and only surviving child, Elizabeth Boone, who resided with them. In his 1812 codicil he made bequests to his brother-in-law Josiah Tattnall Sr. and his grandchildren Thomas B., James, Edward, Josiah, Sarah Elizabeth, and Harriott Tattnall. When his Will was proved 16 October 1812, Elizabeth Boone, spinster, was the surviving executor.[14]

Thomas Boone died 25 September 1812 and was buried 3 October at St. Nicholas, Godstone, Surrey.[15][16] His wife had predeceased him, dying 9 April 1812, and was buried at Godstone on 17 April.[17][18]
