Robert BoothCite error 3; Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many arrived in Virginia on or before 30 July 1638.[citation needed]

"Booth of York County We know of three distinct Booth families in Virginia. There was the Booth family of Gloucester County, from which Gen. William. Booth Taliaferro was descended. Then there was a numerous family of the name on the south side of the James, going back to a very early date. The York County Family appears to have no immediate connection with either of these, and has died out in the male line. Robert Booth was clerk of York County from 1640 to 1652. That year (1652) he represented York County in the House of Burgesses, and in 1654 he was again a representative. He died in 1657, leaving a widow Frances , born in 1619, [sic] according to her deposition in 1668. Oct. 25, 1658. An order concerning a debt due Mrs. Frances Booth, widow of Robert Booth, deceased. (York County Records.) They had issue ...[1]

Robert Booth’s land is mentioned in a patent for William Watts and Richard Davis, dated 30 July 1638. Booth’s land borders theirs upon Queen’s Cr. Leift. (Lt.) Popely’s land figures in the patent, as well. So we can say Robert Booth owned land by 30 July 1638, and it is probable that he lived there as well.[2]

According to a history of the Patrick NAPIER family, Robert Booth received land in Charles River County, later York, in 1638.

1 Oct 1638. Rich’d Major of Queens Creek in VA, planter, sells Thomas Bowrren (Bourne?) of Chelscake, cooper, 25 ac on Western side of West Creek, adjoining land of Wm Barber. Signed Rich’d Major. Wit: Robt Booth, Rowland Burnham. “vera coia Mar. Johnson Cl Curia”. 1 Oct 1638. Thomas x Bourne assigns above 25 ac to Wm Barber of Chelscake, cooper. Signed his mark Tho B Bourne. Wit: Wm Hockeday.[3]

24 May 1651. Robt Abrall assigns land in above patent to Robt Booth. Please note that the pages preceding this entry are missing. Signed Rober Abrail. Wit: Lewis Burrell (sic), Wm Gooch.[4]

9 Jan 1651/2. Robt Booth assigns above land to “Elizabeth Garlington the Daughter of Xtopher and Elizabeth Carlington now of the new Proquoson”. Signed Robert Booth. Wit: Roger Radford, Thomas Chapman. Rec 10 Jan 1652/3.[4]

Grant. Dated James City 15 Oct 1652. Richard Bennett Esqr, Governor, etc., to Mrs. Ann Harwood, 300 ac in the County of Charles River, N upon Uties Creek E upon the Glebe land, S upon land of Capt Robt Fellgate and W by S into the woods. The land due to said Harwood as follows: it being formerly granted to John Wayne 10 Jul 1638, and by Wayne assigned to Robt Booth, and by Booth to Capt Stephen Gill, and purchased from Gill by Capt Thomas Harwood as appears by deposition of said Capt Gill and by order of the Quarter Court dated 13 Oct 1652. Signed Richd Bennett, W Clayborne, Secry. Rec 24 Jan --, bt (sic) Tho Ballard[5]

Land conveyances from and to Robert 'Bouth' dated, 1639; 1642; 1649, 1652; 1653; Charles County Patent Records (later York County), show that he was possessed of extensive tracts.

He served as Clerk of York County, Virginia, from 1640 to 1657 and represented York County in the House of Burgesses, 1653 and 1654. In 1657 he died leaving a widow Frances (born 1619 according to her deposition 1668). Robert Booth's Library, valued at 14 pounds sterling contained not less than 300 volumes, we are told in Brun's Constitutional History of Virginia. Colonial records show that Mr. Booth left at his death 23 thousand brick, valued at 184 shillings. Brick was manufactured either by a planter's own slaves on the premises, or by transient labor in those days.

Research Notes

Parentage and Other Errata

As none of the credible sources list his parents, he is being detached from Edward Booth and Elizabeth Massey until valid sources can be found.

Robert Booth of York did not live at Belle Ville. The Gloucester Booths resided at Belle Ville. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Booth-1645 https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Booth-2355 Belle Ville -- On North River. Original crown grant from England to John Boswell and John Booth; original house built about 1658 was burned. On "14 April 1705 this property was transferred by indenture to Thomas Booth, descendant of John, and so on by direct descent through Frances Amanda Todd Booth and Warner Throckmorton Taliaferro, her husband, to their son, William Booth Taliaferro, whose daughter, Miss L. S. Taliaferro has indentures, deeds and other papers relating to Belleville dating back as far 1696."[6]

Humphrey Booth has been removed as a child of Robert Booth. His profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Booth-1033 was erroneously attached to Robert Booth as a son. Humphrey Booth was a London merchant who emigrated to Virginia in 1653 and settled in Rappahannock County. He is inter-related to the Underwoods and Catletts. Booth, Humphrey (in Virginia 1654, &c.), Rappahannock county, of London, merchant, in 1653.[7]

Thomas Booth https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Booth-1029 has also been removed as a child of Robert Booth. He will be merged at a later date with Thomas Booth, progenitor of the Southside Booths. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Booth-7968

removed Edward (Bothe) Booth Jr. (1581-1628) as father. Profile text includes the following:
As none of the credible sources list his parents, he is being detached from Edward Booth and Elizabeth Massey until valid sources can be found.

The same applies to Bothe-2.

Booth-354 and Booth-1027 are not ready to be merged because: Booth-1027 and Booth 354 seem to be very similar, both with the same birth and death dates, but places are both different. Not all the children are the same either. I'd like to see more data before merging. Lets make them an Unmerged Match, awaiting developments.
