William Booth Marshall was the illegitimate son of Sarah Ann Booth, born in Beverley 1867 [1] later adopted by George Marshall when he married her.
It is sometimes hard to differentiate him from his cousin William Booth son of Edmund Booth, born in 1869, so two years later, but a generation younger. Edmund, his father, is the brother of Robert Booth, the grandfather of this William
William's grandfather, Robert Booth's career as a landlord meets triumph: After years crowding his little lodgings and houses he becomes a real landlord at the Lord Nelson, Flemingate, Beverley. He continues to work as an Ag Lab as well as running the inn. It may at first seem odd that the larger premises have no more guests, but perhaps the terms of the lease require that the downstairs is used only for brewing and serving beer and other drinks. William Booth is Sarah Ann's son not her brother. The pub is within yards of St Andrew's Street where her future husband, George Marshall lives with his mother. [2]
Robert Booth was not at the Lord Nelson for long: Sarah's mother, Mary Ann Booth died in the last quarter of 1871, followed by her father Robert and his uncle Charles Mason in the last quarter of 1872. We do not (yet?) know whether Sarah at about 20 years old was burdened with her young son, or he was cast in the workhouse. [3]
In 1873, at the age of 30, George Marshall marries in Drypool, Hull. His bride is Sarah Ann Booth, eight years younger than him, who he must have met when he lived with his mother in St Andrew St, Beverley as she and her relatives lived close by. [4]
In Yorkshire BMD the church and date are different: the reason for this evident error is not obvious.
In 1881 George is living in a cottage on Beckside, Beverley and now working as foreman in the nearby fertiliser works ("Chemical Manure"). He is noted as born Lockington, and all other members of the family in Beverley. William Booth Marshall is his stepson. The unnamed infant is later named Sarah Ann after her mother. Sarah Ann's illegitimate child William has been adopted by George Marshall, who as an illegitimate child himself is perhaps more sensitive on this matter than the archetypical Victorian. [5]
In 1881 the two William Booths are given the same age, 14, but this one is on Beckside next to the short canal "Beverley Beck" which brought heavy goods into Beverley until after the Second World War. Logically this was the William found with his mother and step-father, with the two males employed in the Chemical Manure Works nearby. The other William, Sarah's cousin is a scholar in the Beverley Workhouse: he too is classed as 14, but is really only 12.
In 1900 William Marshall is in Central Falls, Providence RI, USA aged 33 with his wife Ellen 30 born Ireland and four children, Sarah Ann and Ellen twins aged 5, George William aged 3, and John aged 3 all born Rhode Ireland. [6] [7] [8]
William Marshall applied for Social Security during the Great Depression. Parts of his application are misleading, but it is clearly this man.
Note: William Booth, a scholar in Beverley Union Workhouse 1881 age 14 William Booth in the workhouse is not Sarah Ann's child. This is a very similar William BOOTH b 1867 son of Edmund (Robert's brother) who marries Sarah Ann PEACOCK in Feb 1901. This cousin is also the William BOOTH Chemical Works Labourer (1901) RG13-4462-33 p3 13, Married, living 4 George Street, Beverley, England.
