Rachel and James Black are buried at Mt. Harmony Methodist cemetery near the Cleveland-Rutherford County line (off Hwy 226 near Duncan's Creek, where a state historical marker for the church is posted). The deteriorating gravestone indicates "In Memory of James Black, died Sept. 27, 1827," at the age of 72, placing his birth circa 1755. He is buried next to his wife, Rachel. No dates are given for Rachel but the same deteriorating gravestone indicates "also his wife, Rachel, aged 86." The stone has deteriorated greatly but I recorded the wording of the stone several decades ago during one of my early visits to the gravesite. (Bill Floyd, who surveyed and recorded numerous graveyards in the region also noted the "aged 86" for Rachel.)
Some genealogy researchers contend Rachel's maiden name was Booth. Some 1906 Cleveland County NC court affidavits find three of her grand daughters stating that she was from Pennsylvania and had been a Booth prior to marriage.
