Life

The Rev. Victoria Booth-Clibborn Demarest, was an evangelist, writer and member of the founding family of the Salvation Army[1]. She was born in Paris and graduated from the Paris Conservatory of Music.

She began accompanying her mother, Catherine Booth-Clibborn, on preaching tours. Catherine, with her husband, Arthur, had disassociated themselves from the Salvation Army in 1902[2]. She came to the United States in 1918.

In 1949, Demarest was ordained a minister in the Congregational Church, now the United Church of Christ, at the Broadway Tabernacle Congregational Church at 58th Street.

As well as preaching, Demarest spoke four languages, played the piano, and was the author of over six books. She earned the appellation, “Prophet of Ecumenical Christianity.”[2]

Family

Demarest was the granddaughter of William Booth, who founded the mission group in England that became the Salvation Army, and the daughter of Catherine Booth-Clibborn, who organized groups in France and the Netherlands.

She married Cornelius Demarest in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1859, an organist and choirmaster[2]. He travelled with her on her crusades as an evangelistic singer. Together they wrote hymns and sacred music.

Influence

Demarest is credited with helping popularise and spread the Pentecostal movement in Newfoundland.

Death

Demarest died of heart failure at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla. She was 93 years old and lived in St. Petersburg, Her husband died in 1959. She was survived by four children: Evangeline Demarest of St. Petersburg; Victoria Monro of Austin, Tex.; Arthur Demarest of Beechurst, Queens, and Cornelius Demarest of Lexington; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Passport Application 1919

Victoria Booth Clibborn Demarest applied for a passport, as a United States citizen. She notes she was previously a British subject, before marriage to Cornelius, and that she was born Jan 1, 1890, in Paris, France. She lived in France, Holland and Belgium between 1890 and 1908; and then in England between 1908 and 1913[3].

She was living in Chicago, Illinois, where she followed the occupation of Evangelist. She requested to replace a destroyed passport, so she could travel to England "to take sister broken down mentally through over exertion in religious work back to our mother Catherine Booth-Clibborn eldest daughter of the late General William Booth of England founder of the Salvation Army - residing in London England. My sister Frida Booth-Clibborn is a British subject."

Demarest was described as being age 29, 5'8, with blue eyes. A medium mouth, a round chin, and a high forehead. Brown hair, oval face, straight nose.

Residence 1930

In the United States Census, for Norfolk, Virginia, Victoria Demarest (age 40, born in France) was living in a household with her husband Cornelius A Demarest (47, Pennsylvania). Also in the house were their children John M (21, Kentucky), Cornelius A Jr (19, Kentucky), Victoria B (9, Illinois), Arthur S (8, Illinois), David L (5, Illinois), Catherine E (0, Virginia). In the same house were Frieda L Boothe Clibborn (sister-in-law, 33, Holland); Maxwell J Roberts (boarder, 27, Newfoundland); and Emilie W Vaughn (boarder, 69, New York[4].

Residence 1940

In the United States Census of 1940, for Burlington, Neww Jersey, Victoria Demarest (age 50, born in France) was staying in the household of a friend, Martha Perrine[5]. Also with them were Agnew Demarest [her husband, Cornelius] age 58, born in New Jersey. Arthur Demarest (18, Pennsylvania), David Demarest (15, New Jersey), and Evangeline Demarest (10, New Jersey).
