Biography

Elbert Boots was born in the hamlet of Zuid-Spierdijk in the municipality of Berkhout on 30 August 1812 ^[1]. His parents were Germent Boots and Lijsbeth de Haan. His birth was reported to the authorities in Berkhout by his father, then 23 years old and a farmer by profession. His mother Lijsbeth was then 19 years old. Germent was accompanied by two witnesses: Jan Haring (age 33, a shoemaker) and Jan Keuning (age 50, day labourer), neither of them with an obvious relation to the family.

On 13 April 1834 Elbert married Geertje Ursem ^[2]. Elbert then was 21 years old and a labourer by profession, Geertje was 22. His mother, Elizabeth de Haan and Geertje's father, Jan Ursem, attended the ceremony, expressed their consent and co-signed the marriage deed. His father, Germent Boots and Geertje's mother, Aagje Muns, had died previously. One of the witnesses was Pieter Groot, the second husband of his mother and thus his stepfather (that fact is not mentioned in the deed).

Elbert died at the age of 81 in Berkhout on 23 February 1894 ^[3].
