Biography

Floyd Borghardt, 1896-1965, was the son of Frederick William Borghardt and Cora Richardson, who married in 1895 and had four children. Floyd married Dovie Hall. They had (at least) three children: Jewel C, 1920-1921; Betty Lorene, 1923; and Robert Dale, 1932-2012. [1]

In 1900, the Borghardt family lived on a rented farm in Doylesport Township, Barton, Missouri. The family included Frederick W. Borghardt, 31, born in Nov. 1869 in Missouri (parents b. Germany), a farmer; his wife of five years, Cora, 31, b. Nov. 1869 in Illinois (father b. NC; mother b. IN), who had had one child; their son, Floyd, 4, b. Feb 1896 in MO. The adults could read and write. Living nearby were three other Borghardt households:

  • Walter B. Borghardt, b. Jan. 1876 (Frederick’s brother)
  • Louis Borghardt, 64, b. 1836 (Frederick’s father); his wife, Christina, 56; and three children, Emma, Edd, and Minnie.
  • Carl Borghardt, 70, b. 1830 (Louis’ brother); his wife, Eliza, b. 1835; and twins, Margaret and James, b. Jan. 1887. [2]

NOTE: Carl Frederick Borghardt-10 (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/2SJF-8YF) is the brother of Louis Franz Ludwig Borghardt, 1836 Germany- 1904 (not on Wikitree). Louis was the father of Frederick William Borghardt, who was the father of Floyd. Carl and Louis were the sons of Friedrich Heinrich Borghardt (1780-1841), who was the son of Louis Ludwig Borghardt (1755 Prussia). The families of Carl and Louis as shown on the 1900 Census match up to data on the family tree cited above.

In 1910, the Borghardt family lived on their farm in Drywood, Vernon, Missouri. The household included

  • Fred W Borghardt 41 born in Missouri (parents b.Germany), a farmer, married for 15 years
  • Cora Borghardt, Wife. 40 b. Illinois (parents b. Indiana), who had had three children, all of whom were living
  • Floyd Borghardt Son 14 Missouri, in school
  • Ruby Borghardt Daughter 6 Missouri, in school
  • Fern A Borghardt Daughter 2 Missouri.

The adults could read and write. [3]

Floyd Borghardt (21), born 6 February 1896 at Chalk Level, Missouri, registered for the WWI Draft on 5 June 1917 in Barton County, Missouri. He was single, a self-employed farmer, residing in Irwin, Missouri. Floyd claimed an exemption due to physical disability. He was tall and slender, with brown eyes and hair. [4]

Floyd Borghardt served during WWI as a Corporal with Company A,307 BTN TC, from 27 August 1918 to 31 December 1918. [5]

In 1920, the Borghardts lived on their rented farm in Barton, Missouri. Floyd, 23, was a farmer. He was born in Missouri (father b. MO; mother b. IL). His wife, Dovie, 20, was born in Alabama, as were her parents. [6]

In 1930, the Borghardts lived in Union Township, Barton, Missouri. The household included:

  • Foyd Borghardt, 34, born in Missouri (father b. MO; mother b. IL), a farmer, and a WWI veteran, who married at age 21
  • Dovie Borghardt, Wife, 30, b. Alabama (parents b. Alabama)
  • Betty L Borghardt Daughter 7 Oklahoma, in school
  • Carl T Borghardt Son 3 Missouri
  • Lulla G Evilsizer Boarder Female 18 Missouri, a teacher [7]

In 1940, the Borghardt family lived on their farm in Union Township, Barton, Missouri. They had lived there for at least five years. The household included

  • Floyd Borghardt, 44 born in Missouri, a farmer, who had completed two years of high school
  • Dovie Borghardt, Wife, 40 , b. Alabama, who had completed three years of high school
  • Betty Lorene Borghardt Daughter 17 Oklahoma
  • Carl Truman Borghardt Son 13 Missouri
  • Bobby Dale Borghardt Son 8 Missouri
  • Cora Borghardt Mother 70 Illinois, a widow, who had moved from rural Barton, MO within the previous five years, and who had completed one year of high school.[8]

Floyd Borghardt died, aged 69, in Missouri in October 1965. His last residence was in Missouri. He was born on 6 February 1896. [9]

Floyd Borghardt was the son of Fred Borghardt and Cora Richardson. He served as a Corporal in the Tank Corps during WWI. He married Dovie Hall on 12 December 1917 in James, Pawnee, Oklahoma. Floyd died in a hospital in Nevada, Vernon, Missouri, and is buried with his wife and their son, Robert Dale “Bob” Borghardt (1932-2012) at Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon, Missouri. Two children are buried elsewhere: Betty Lorene Baker (1923-2003) and Carl Truman Borghardt (1926-2021). [10] Also buried at Sheldon Cemetery are Floyd’s parents and paternal grandparents.
