Biography

Charles was born June 5, 1933, in Hodge, La., to Bessie May and Joseph Morris Borland. He attended school there until the age of 17, when he moved to Yakima to work on a fruit farm.

He joined the Merchant Marines in 1952 and worked as an oiler and studied diesel mechanics.

Charles moved his parents and family to Tieton, Wash., near Yakima, in 1953.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953. He was stationed in several locations and served a tour of duty in West Germany before spending two years in Washington.

He moved to Lewiston in 1957 where he met and married Barbara Snyder. They had eight children.
