Records

Notes

Her death certificate and gravestone both show a birthdate of 10 April 1870, but this appears to be incorrect by one day. Her baptism record shows that she was born about two in the afternoon on 11 April 1870.

In her adult life, she was called Adelia. The name on her 1870 Swiss baptism record is clearly Adelheid (see below). On an 1880 passenger list, as she immigrated, her name is given as Adele. In the 1880 census, her name is entered as Adah. On her 1889 marriage record, her name is spelled Ada. In the censuses of 1920, 1930, 1940, in her death certificate and on her gravestone, her name is given as Adelia. (It is the policy of Wikitree to give preference to the name at birth, so Adelheid is shown as her primary name in this entry, though Adelia was clearly her preferred name later in life.)

Baptism Record

Her birth record shows her birth date as "April 11" 1870. She was born about two hours after noon. Her name is shown in Kurrent script as Adelheid. Her parents were "Benedikt Born, Schlosser, von Balsthal, M. Anna Friedli, von Marbach Kt. Luzern." This shows that her father was a locksmith in Balsthal. Her mother was Maria Anna Friedli (Fridli), from Marbach in the canton of Luzern.[1]

Death of Father

A document in Switzerland shows that Benedikt Born died on 4 January 1876. The document is an inventory of his estate. It shows that Benedikt Born had three young children at the time of his death: sons Emil and Richard, and daughter Adelheid. (See her father's entry for more information.)

Sometime after her father Benedikt's death, at an unknown date between 1876 and 1880, her mother married Eduard/Edward Born in Switzerland. Edward was a member of the same extended family as Benedikt (presumably a cousin of some degree).

Passenger List

According to records from the Port of New York, the Born family immigrated to the United States on 1 May 1880, having sailed from Le Havre, France. The family was recorded as Edouard Born, 37; Marie Born, 39; Emilie Born, 11; Adele Born, 10; and Richard Born, 5. They arrived at Castle Garden at the tip of Manhattan (the Castle Garden station predates Ellis Island, which opened in 1892) aboard the "France," and are listed nos. 158–162 among the passengers of that ship.[2]

1880 Census

In the 1880 census, record June 18th and 19th, the Born family lived in Lexington, Lafayette County, Missouri. The family is listed as Edward Born, 36, farmer; Marie Ann Born, 36, wife; Amile Born, 12, son; "Adah" Born, 10, daughter; Richardt Born, 6, son; Wm Born, 4, son, John Born, 1. All were born in Switzerland.[3]

1889 Marriage Record

A marriage record in Lafayette County, Missouri, shows the marriage of Joseph Bell of Page City and "Ada" Born of Mayview on 14 May 1889. Page City and Mayview were/are very small communities in Lafayette County.[4]

1897 Plat Book

The 1897 Plat Book of Lafayette County, Missouri shows that her stepfather "Ed. Born" owned 80 acres of land north of the town of Mayview.[5] His property was two square lots connected at their corners. The northeastern point of the property was at approx. 39.0901°,-93.8158° (at a 90° corner in present-day Hearthstone Road). In her marriage record in 1889, her hometown was called Mayview, so this must have been where she lived.

In the 1914 plat book of Lafayette County, the same 80 acres was owned by her brother "Amos E. Born."[6]

1900 Census

In the 1900 census, Joseph Bell, 38, farmer, was head of household in Washington Township, Lafayette County, Missouri. His wife was mistakenly called "Belle Bell" in the listing. Also in the household were Laura Bell, 6; Otto Bell, 3; and Edward Bell, 1.[7]

1910 Census

In the 1900 census, Joseph Bell, 47, farmer, was head of household in Davis Township, Lafayette County, Missouri. His wife Adelia Bell was 40. They had children, all born in Missouri: Laura Bell, 16; Otto Bell, 13; Edward Bell, 10; Tony Bell, 8; Leonard Bell, 6; Joseph Bell Jr., 3; and an unnamed infant daughter. The record indicates that Adelia had had 9 children of whom 7 were living in 1910.[8]

1920 Census

1920 census: Joseph Bell, 57, Wisconsin; Adelia Bell, wife, 49, Switzerland. They had children, all born in Missouri: Laura Bell, 25; Otto Bell, 22; Edward J Bell, 20; Anthem Bell, son,18; Leonard Bell, 16; Joseph H Bell, 12; Anges F Bell, 9.[9]

1940 Census

1940 census: Joseph Bell, 77, Wisconsin; Adelia Bell, wife, 70, Switzerland; Agnese F Bell, daughter, 30, Missouri; Frank G Bell, brother, 62 Wisconsin.[11]

1950 Census

The 1950 census shows Adelia Bell, widow, 80, living in the household of her son-in-law at 414 Woodland [Avenue] in the town of Moberly, Randolph County, Missouri. Albert L. Klein, 45, was a packing room laborer in a shoe factory. His wife Agnes F. Klein (Adelia's daughter) was 40.

Death Certificate

A death certificate shows that Adelia Bell died at the residence of 414 Woodland [Avenue], Moberly, Randolph County, Missouri, on 15 June 1952.[12] Her death certificate calls her Adelia Borne Bell. It gives her parents as Benedict Borne and Mary A. "Friedla." Mrs. Albert Klein is the informant indicated on her death certificate. (Mrs. Albert Klein was Adelia's daughter Agnes.)

Regarding the spelling of her maiden name, "Born" was how the name was consistently spelled in Switzerland and in the family's first decades in Missouri. Thereafter, beginning sometime in the 1900s, some of the family began spelling the name "Borne."

Burial

An entry in the records of St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Higginsville, shows the death of Adelia Bell in Moberly on June 16 [sic] and burial on June 18.[13] No family members are mentioned.

Adelia Bell was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Higginsville, Lafayette County, Missouri. She shares a gravestone with her husband.[14]
