William Borthwick of Pilmuir and Mayshiell was the son of Alexander Borthwick and Sibilla Cairns. He mar. (1) Marion Borthwick, dau. of James Borthwick of Stow, and (2) Marjory Steuart, dau. of Harie Steuart, brother of Sir Thomas Steuart of Grantully and (3) Eupheme Young.
