According to family history, Thomas married Sarah "Betsy" Wright Martin just prior to enlisting in the Confederate Army, fulfilling the terms of the Conscription Act, however the Hanover Marriage records show their wedding date as 8/1/1867.
Enlisted as a Private in Co. G, 2nd Battalion Virginia Infantry, Local Defense. His age is listed as 46 years.
The Virginia 2nd Infantry Battalion Local Defense Troops was organized at Richmond, Virginia, in June 1863, with employees of the Quartermaster Department. It contained seven companies and in July 1863 totalled 343 men. The unit was assigned to General G.W.C. Lee's Brigade in the Department of Richmond. During September, 1864 it merged into the 2nd Infantry Regiment Local Defense Troops. The field officers were Lieutenant Colonels John W. Carter, D.E. Scruggs, and Richard P. Waller.
Family 1344, Lower Revenue District, pg. 167, 1870 U. S. Census of Hanover County, Sarah's mother is living with him also.
Family 232, Henry District 66, pg. 24, 1880 U. S. Census of Hanover County. Mollie(Margaret?) F. Wright, age 18, is also living with this family as a boarder.
