James was born in 1844. In 1863 he joined or was conscripted into the Arkansas 8th Cavalry. He was listed as being in Newton's Cavalry Company I on Oct 7, when he was captured near his home in Lawrence County, Arkansas. On April 7 1864, he was taken to Alton Federal Prison, possibly already ill. He was moved to the isolation hospital on Small Pox Island and died there on 19 April. His name is listed both on the monument at Alton Confederate Cemetery and the monument for Smallpox Island.
