Biography

Mattie was a published author and editor. It doesn't appear that she ever married or had children.

Mattie Boteler may have set a record when for fifty-four years, without interruption, she taught a Sunday school class. Through her excellent instruction, the class produced lay evangelists and church leaders ably equipped to explain the scriptures.

In her quest to better relay Bible truth, Mattie developed creative teaching methods such as short poems or sayings, called epigrams, to communicate spiritual truth. She also encouraged students to memorize Bible verses.Mattie increased her sphere of influence when, from 1894 until 1911, she edited two publications, Lookout and Christian Standard. The magazines carried her epigrams as well as her articles and commentaries on scripture. A contemporary of Mattie said, "No preacher among us ...is a safer expounder of scripture than was she."Anyone can just get by, but it takes added effort to excel. Whether you teach the Bible as Mattie Boteler did, do housework and care for children, or have a nine-to-five job, strive for excellence. It will inspire those who observe your life, give you great satisfaction, and honor God whom you serve. Sunday School Teacher, Author, Editor-1859-1929 [1]
