Name

Johannes Botha [1][2][3]

Birth

Date: Johannes Botha was born before 1695.[4]

Notes on parentage

Between 11 June 1683 and 1700 Maria Kickers and Jan Cornelisz were legally married, but at the same time, from at least 1687 Frederich Both and Maria were lovers, apparently with the agreement of Jan. During divorce proceedings in 1700 Maria conceded that eight of her children, that is Theunis Botha, Willem Bootha, Catrijna Both, Cornelia Botha, Anna Bota, Maria Botha, Jacobus Botha and Johannes Botha were fathered by Frederich Both(a) with the apparent encouragement (aanleijding) of her spouse, Jan Cornelisz, at the time. All of these offspring subsequently used the surname Both(a). However, in 1689 two women alleged that Theunis, Maria's oldest child, was fathered by Ferdinandùs Appel. This is born out by modern DNA tests, which have shown that direct patrilineal descendants of Theunis tested positive for the same Y-DNA haplogroup as direct patrilineal descendants of Appel. [5][6]

  2. (Copied from the profile of Jan "Jan Kiekers, Bombam, Jan Cornelis" Botha formerly Cornelisz aka Boota, Bota, van Oudtbeierlandt on Jan 2, 2021.) Note on last name "Botha": Though Jan Cornelisz was according to records of the time never known as Botha, the name is still included on this profile under "Other Last Names" (AKA). The name is associated with Jan Cornelisz because some semi-recent genealogies held the suspicion that he may also have been known as Botha. This misunderstanding was due to the fact that "his" children, who were in fact not his own biological offspring, by Maria Kickers later all went under the name of Botha or various spelling versions thereof. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Johannes by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line. Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line: It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Johannes:

May I ask of the reliability of the book: In Search of Notability - the Antecedents of Dawid van der Merwe of the Koue Bokkeveld. As given in PDF above.

Francis, there is no such thing as a solely 'reliable' or 'un-reliable' source. All facts can only be validated in collation, i.e. taking at least 3 points of view (context) to compare and evaluate with. The van der Merwe-genealogy had - as with with many other genealogies - become pretty muggy and messed up over the years. This study of 'the Antecedents of David of the Koue Bokkeveld' was / is one attempt to clear things up (I communicated by the author just the other day). In scholarly fashion. I use it (and as can be read here) as a long term study of validation on the profile of Van_der_Merven-5, which serves as master. When I have finished, I will move the data to a connected WikiTree free-space page.

Thanks, Phillip,

I was just looking through the van der Merwe tree here on WikiTree. The line seems correct until the last 2 generations which are largely sourced by thin air, genanet, geni and a G2G answer which explains possible Broek baptism place variants more than anything else. This book however talks about the line for at least one more generation.

Validation is a process Francis. All those sites you are naming, as well as the G2G, are only instruments pointing to the context. As can be seen on Van_der_Merven-5, some profiles still have to be created, whilst others may have been already created. And this is just one branch of the extensive van der Merwe-genealogy. The process is not done yet. Newton-King helped to solve conflation on WikiTree (see here for example). It is a long haul and after finishing with this comment, I'll have to wrap this conversation and continue with my genealogical research as my time is limited.

Warning: Check the data.

A birth date (Botha-173 born 1 May 1695) should not be within eight months of a sibling's birth date (Cornelisse-65 born 5 Jan 1695) unless they are twins born within a day of each other.

Botha-1104 and Botha-173 appear to represent the same person because: Proposal to merge Botha-1104 into Botha-173 as they are duplicate profiles. Sincerely, Philip van der Walt-440
