In n artikel oor "The Botha family" wat in die "The South African Almanack and Reference Book 1911-1912" verskyn het, word gemeld dat Philip een van die mooiste plase in die Bruintjieshoogte, genaamd De Kelder, besit het en dat hy n invloedryke en welvarende boer was. Volgens hierdie artikel het die Britse regering se wyse van kompensasie aan eienaars vir hulle vrygestelde slawe Philip gegrief en "He angrilly abandoned his landed properties, and became one of the leaders of the Great Trek"[1]
