Biography

Name

Theunis Botha [1][2][3][4][5][6][2]

Birth

Date: [about] 1686 [3][4][5] / before Apr 15, 1686 [1]
Place: Stellenbosh, Cape of Good Hope [South Africa] [1] / Swellendam, South Africa [4]

Ouers / Parents

Father

Friedrich Botha (Both-15) [1][8] / Friedrich Both (Both-18) [2][8] / Frederik Botha (Botha-913) [4][8]

Mother

Maria Botha (Kickers-1) [1] / Maria Kickers (Kickers-2) [2] / Maria Kickers (Kickers-5) [4]

Notes on parentage

Between 11 June 1683 and 1700 Maria Kickers and Jan Cornelisz were legally married, but at the same time, from at least 1687 Frederich Both and Maria were lovers, apparently with the agreement of Jan. During divorce proceedings in 1700 Maria conceded that eight of her children, that is Theunis Botha, Willem Bootha, Catrijna Both, Cornelia Botha, Anna Bota, Maria Botha, Jacobus Botha and Johannes Botha were fathered by Frederich Both(a) with the apparent encouragement (aanleijding) of her spouse, Jan Cornelisz, at the time. All of these offspring subsequently used the surname Both(a). However, in 1689 two women alleged that Theunis, Maria's oldest child, was fathered by Ferdinandùs Appel. This is borne out by modern DNA tests, which have shown that direct patrilineal descendants of Theunis tested positive for the same Y-DNA haplogroup as direct patrilineal descendants of Appel. [9][8][10]

Family

Friedrich Both (later Botha) * Duitsland 4.3.1653 [Both-15] s.v. Michael Both en Susanna Saulus arriveer aan die Kaap vanaf Wangenheim naby Gotha, as soldaat in 1678. Vyf jaar later verkry hy burgerregte en vanaf 1686 is hy bywoner by Jan Cornelist. In 1692 teken hy sy van nog as Both, maar in 1699 teken hy as Botha. [Kickers-1]
  • b1 Theunis = 15.4.1686 [Cornelis-274] later shown to be the son of [Appel-29] x 15.12.1710 Maria Magdalena SNYMAN [Snijman-64].
    • c1 Theunis = 7.11.1711 [Bota-9]
    • c2 Christoffel = 11.2.1713 [Bota-25] x 13.12.1733 Hester POTGIETER [Potgieter-62]
      • d1 Theunis = 18.7.1734 [Botha-8381] [17]

Research Notes

  • See rejected match Theunis (Cornelis) Botha (bef.1686-1765) with same marriage data - 13 June 1734 . . . ? Baxter-5479 25 Jul 2022
  • Based on the Marriage to Maria Catharina van Eeven on 13 Jun 1734 where it was stated that he was heemraad aen Drak:stein, wewenaer, I believe this profile [Botha-370] is a duplicate of Theunis (Cornelis) Botha (bef.1686-bef.1746). That profile already has the marriage record on it. I will therefore merge this profile [Botha-370] into it. Laubscher-282 01:51, 21 March 2023 (UTC)

  10. (Copied from the profile of Jan "Jan Kiekers, Bombam, Jan Cornelis" Botha formerly Cornelisz aka Boota, Bota, van Oudtbeierlandt on Jan 2, 2021.) Note on last name "Botha": Though Jan Cornelisz was according to records of the time never known as Botha, the name is still included on this profile under "Other Last Names" (AKA). The name is associated with Jan Cornelisz because some semi-recent genealogies held the suspicion that he may also have been known as Botha. This misunderstanding was due to the fact that "his" children, who were in fact not his own biological offspring, by Maria Kickers later all went under the name of Botha or various spelling versions thereof. He must have died before 22 July 1746. On that day their will was presented at the Orphan Chamber. His widow was recorded on various muster rolls for Drakenstein and Swellendam after this date. She died at Swellendam in November 1781.

The profiles for Theunis (Cornelis) Botha (bef.1686-1765) and Theunis Botha (bef.1720-) should be merged and the marriage to Maria Magdalena van Eeden (bef.1712-1772) should be removed. Marija Catrijna (van Eden) Botha (bef.1696-bef.1782) is the correct second wife of Theunis Botha.

Both their marriage record and will provides evidence.

Apologie. Ek dink daar was 'n mutasie as ek reg onthou, maar jy is reg DNA jok nie. Jammer vir die onodige werk Philip. Sjoe dankie tog vir samewerking. Briljant as almal saam praat.
DNA seems hard to argue with...

Ok, read it. So Appel might be the father after all ...?

Wait a minute, Philip and Ronel. Please carefully read the two pieces referenced under 9 above and then let us know who you consider the accurate biological father of Theunis to be.
posted by Dirk le Roux
Hi Lynette. Going on the research and the information in the bio(s), I have now corrected the father connection that was incorrectly changed on this date.
posted by Philip van der Walt
Hi Lynette Read the Bios of Maria Kickers. Botha was in fact the biological father of all her children.
I have entered the father as Ferdinandus Appel but I know that Friederich Both Botha adopted Theunis giving him his name , how do I add Friederich to my family tree.
