Biography

Mary (Botham) Howitt is Notable.

Mary was born in 1799 to a Quaker family. Her parents were Samuel and Ann Botham. ^[1]

She married William Howitt in 1821. ^[2] William and Mary were both writers and published a large number of works on a number of subjects. Both published some works individually but they also frequently collaborated.

William and Mary initially settled in Nottingham where William had a chemist's shop on Parliament Street. They subsequently moved with their children to Esher in Surrey and then spent 2 years in the early 1840s in Heidelberg in Germany, feeling that their children would benefit from a German education.

In 1851 Mary & William were living in the Marylebone area of London. ^[3] William and two of his sons also spent time in the 1850s in the Australian goldfields but Mary remained in England.

In 1861 Mary & William were living in St Pancras. William was listed as an author of general literature and Mary as an author and poetess. ^[4]

In later life William and Mary spent most of their time in Europe, in Rome and the Tyrol. Mary died in Rome in 1888 and is buried there with her husband who had died earlier in 1879. ^[5]
