Biography

Ernest Woodward Boucher was the son of Rev Alfred Francis Boucher of Kempsey House, Kempsey in Worcester. He was born in Cheddleton, Staffordshire, in 1862 where his father was the Vicar of Cheddleton. Ernest's mother was Rev Boucher's first wife, Anne Woodward, who died in 1868, when he would have been about 6 years old.

At the age of 8, in 1871, he was attending a private school that was run by cousins, the Lamb sisters, in Guildford.

Ernest emigrated to New Zealand, where he and his younger half brother Percy became farmers on land in Te Puke, initially on property owned by their father in England.

In 1892 Ernest married Anna Augusta Vercoe [1], daughter of a local farmer Henry Vercoe in Te Puke.

BOUCHER — VERCOE It is our pleasant duty to record the marriage at Te Puke which took place on Thursday, the 14th inst of Mr Ernest Woodward Boucher of Kempsey, Te Puke to Miss Anna Vercoe, second daughter of Mr Henry W Vercoe of Fairfield, Te Puke…took place at 3 o’clock in the Te Puke Hall, was conducted by the Rev Wm Goodyear of Maketu… [Bay of Plenty Times, Mon 18 Jan 1892, p2 + notice][2]

In 1898 Ernest's father died in England, and he was one of the beneficiaries of his substantial estate.[3]

Ernest and Anna had four children. Sadly they lost two sons in the 1st World War; Edgar was 24 and Arthur just 23 years of age.

He passed away in 1920 at the age of 58 and is buried in the Old Te Puke Cemetery, Bay of Plenty.[4]
