At the age of seventeen, Robert enlisted in the 5th Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Militia as a private under the command of Capt. David Elliot. He was mustered in on 18 September 1812 and enlisted equipped with a horse, saddle, bridle, rifle, pouch and horn, tomahawk, and scalp knife. He was later transferred to Capt. Black's company. He received $6.66 per month while in the service during the war of 1812 but the length and details of his service is not known. He volunteered in June 1832 as a private under the command of Capt. Gooding in the 1st Missouri Mounted Volunteers for service in the Indian War of 1832... Robert came to MIssouri in 1818 and settled in Howard County. After his marriage he settled in Randolph County four miles north of Hunstville. He was one of the first settlers of Randolph County and it was said that his wife Elizabeth was the first white woman north of Sugar Creek.
