Biography

Peter Bowshelder was born about the year 1743, a child of Mathew Bowshelder who was born in France in 1700, and who settled in Loudoun County, Colony of Virginia. Peter bound to a millwright at age 5, and at age 20 married Jane Waddell from Maryland.[1]

Peter obtained land warrants signed by Isaac Shelby, governor of Kentucky. “In making out these papers Peter Bowshelder’s name was written Peter Boucher, the new name was accepted and adopted, inasmuch as this being the only family of the original family living, and the name being much shorter and more convenient. Peter Boucher, Sr. moved to this land, that part in Warren County north of Barren River, about the year 1795. He lived in the community until his death, which occurred September 1st, 1809.”[1]

Research Notes

Birth date obtained from information posted at genforum.genealogy.com/boucher/messages/1820.html reportedly derived from a book entitled "History of the Spilman Family" published by the Fountain & Journal Mount Vernon, Mo (1909) from Euphrates Boucher. I have not read the material in question, but reportedly the book recounted that Peter Boucher, Sr. was born in Loudon County, Virginia and that his surname Boucher was sometimes listed as Bowshelder. He was reportedly apprenticed to a mill wright (wagon wheel maker?) at the age of 5 in Virginia after his parents and other family members perished.

However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Peter:
