Claude Boudrot was born about 1663 in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France, son of Michel Boudrot (abt. 1600–aft. 1688) and Michelle Aucoin (abt. 1620–1706).[1] He was mentioned for the first time in the Port-Royal census of 1671.[2] He was listed as 8 years old at the time, living with his parents and ten siblings. Claude was enumerated in Port-Royal again with his family in 1678, at the age of 16, according to Stephen A. White.[3] His interpretation of the census, which mentions that there were 5 boys between the ages of 12 and 22 in the family home with no names given, differs from Rev. Clarence J. d'Entremont's interpretation who believes that Claude was absent from that census and the boy age 16 was Olivier.[4]

Claude was married three times and fathered twenty-one children.[3]

In 1682, Claude (~18) married Anne Marie Thibodeau (~15) (born about 1666 in Port-Royal; daughter of Pierre Thibodeau and Jeanne Thériot) in 1682 in Acadie. Their known children were:

  1. Claude Boudrot (abt. 1683–aft. 1742) .
  2. Michel Boudrot (abt. 1685–abt. 1755) .
  3. Joseph Boudrot (abt. 1687–bef. 1756) .
  4. Anne Marie Boudrot (abt. 1690–aft. 1755) .
  5. Marie Boudrot (abt. 1692–bef. 1768) .
  6. Anne Boudrot (abt. 1694–1768) .
  7. Elisabeth Boudrot (1696–abt. 1756) .
  8. Marguerite Boudrot (abt. 1698–aft. 1767)

In 1686, at Baye des Mines, Claude BOUDROT, aged ~23, was living with his newlywed wife, Rnne-Marie [sic] TIBODEAU [sic], aged ~20. There was no land or livestock listed.[5]

Seven years later, in the 1693 census, five children were listed and they owned cattle, sheep, pigs, cultivated land and had one gun.[6]

In 1700, at Grand-Pré, Acadie, when Anne Marie died, Claude (~36) married Catherine Meunier (~19) (born ~1680 in Île d'Orléans, Canada, Nouvelle-France; daughter of Jean Meunier and Marguerite Housseau).

Their known children were:

  1. Catherine Boudrot (abt. 1700–bef. 1731) .
  2. Cecile Boudrot (abt. 1701–1725) .
  3. Étienne Boudrot (abt. 1703–bef. 1756) .
  4. Marie Anne Boudrot (abt. 1705–1759) .
  5. Paul Boudrot (1707–abt. 1758) .
  6. François Boudrot (1709–bef. 1763) .
  7. Jean Boudrot (abt. 1711–bef. 1763) .
  8. Pierre Boudrot (abt. 1712–1759) .
  9. Françoise Boudrot (abt. 1715–bef. 1751) .
  10. Marie Josephe (Boudreaux) Boudrot (1718–bef. 1761) .
  11. Claire Boudrot (1719–1741) .
  12. Anne Boudrot (1721–1756) .
  13. Charles Boudrot (1725–bef. 1781)

Claude was widowed from Catherine Meunier and about 72 years old when he married Marie Magdeleine Corporon (62) (born about 1672 in Port-Royal; daughter of Jean Corporon and Françoise Savoie) on 7 Aug 1735 in Annapolis Royal, Acadie, Nova Scotia. It was a third marriage for her also.[7]

Claude passed away five years later. He was interred on March 7, 1740 in the parish of St-Charles aux Mines, Grand-Pré. "Claude Boudrot, age ca 80, bur. 7 March 1740 in the cemetery of the parish of St Charles aux Mines, wit. Pierre Doucet (s)[8]; Joseph Terriot (s); Francois Boudrot; Michel Boudrot (SGA-3,4b)"[9][10][3]

Biographie

Profile of Boudrot-15, Claude, shows age 8 in 1671 Census, and age 16 in 1678 Census, but Boudrot-16, Olivier, shows age 10 in 1671 Census but no mention of 1678 Census. Based on the 2-year gaps between brothers, Olivier should be 16 in 1678, and Claude should have been 14, but not listed.

Posting this to both Boudrot-15 and Boudrot-16. Contact me if not clear.

Hi Julia,

Kudos for spotting those discrepancies. When I added the 1678 census information to the biography, I gave genealogist Stephen A. White's interpretation as noted in the Dictionnaire généalogique des familles acadiennes, while linking the 1678 census transcription as interpreted Rev. Clarence d'Entremont, without noticing the differences. I could not find the original census. I believe that it noted 5 boys in the household, without names. The ages were probably given. d'Entremont seems to have based his interpretation by comparing their ages from the 1671, 1678 and 1686 censuses. (Jean 22, 1656; Abraham 20, 1658; Michel 18, 1660; Olivier 16, 1662; François 12, 1666.) According to White, the 5 boys in the 1678 census were the following: Abraham 22, 1657; Michel 20, 1659; Olivier 18, 1661; Claude 16, 1663; François 12, 1666. Probably the different interpretations can be explained by the fact that White used a greater number of censuses to determine an estimated date of birth for each. Michel is an example, with 8 censuses. Their profiles will be edited to show these differences. I hope this helps. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
