REV. BOUGHTER SUCCUMBS TO AN OPERATION -- Passed Away on Monday Afternoon in the Reading Hospital -- 55 YEARS OF AGE -- Prominent U. B. Minister and Native of Lebanon County
Rev. Charles Edwin Boughter, one of the most prominent ministers of the East Pennsylvania Conference of the United Brethren Church, a native of Lebanon County and who served as a clergyman in this county during his ecclesiastical career, died at 1.45 o'clock, Monday afternoon, in the general hospital at Reading. He was aged nearly 55 years.
His death was the result of an illness which had its inception last August, and followed an operation for the removal of gallstones. He suffered occasional attacks during the past few months, and on Monday, Nov. 27, his condition became so serious that he was taken to the hospital. Rev. Boughter was pastor of the United Brethren Church at Lykens, Pa. He went to Reading on Monday, Nov. 13, and from that time on and until he entered the hospital, resided with his son in apartments on the third floor of 838 Weiser St.
Rev. Boughter was born in Lebanon county and was a son of John and Leah (nee Hay) Boughter. Before his entry into the ministry he taught school for seven years.
He was educated at Lebanon Valley College, which he attended while serving a small Lebanon county charge under the direction of conference. At the conclusion of his work at college he went to Ephrata, where he spent seven years in a very fruitful pastorate. From Ephrata he was transferred to Oberlin, a large congregation in the suburbs of Harrisburg where he was located five years. From Oberlin he was assigned to the First Church at Harrisburg. He also spent three years at Cressona and a number of other appointments, covering practically every phase of clerical experience. From the First Church of Harrisburg, Rev. Boughter went to Reading in October, 1916. He served as pastor of Zion's Church on South Ninth Street, near Penn, four years, longer than any other pastor of that congregation.
TRANSFERRED IN 1920
Rev. Boughter left Reading in October, 1920, when he was transferred to Lykens. Deceased was one of the most active members of the East Pennsylvania Conference. He served as recording secretary for 25 continuous years. He was treasurer of the Christian Endeavor branch of the conference for 19 years.
Remaining to survive the clergyman are his widow, Clara W. (Fritz) Boughter, and the following children: E. Kephart, a member of the faculty of the Lansdale Hgih School; C. Luke of the Weiser street address, Reading; Russell M. of Reading, and Dorothy G., a student at the Westchester Normal School; a grand-daughter, Amelia Anne Boughter, and the following brothers and sisters: Amos, Pinrgrove; John and William, both of Lebanon; Elizabeth, wife of George Motzer, Lebanon; Lydia, wife of Augustus Lesher, Annville; and Emma, wife of Benjamin Shertzer, of Grantville, Dauphin Co.
