Biography

Temperance (Boulter) Neale came free to Van Diemen's Land (1826-1856)

Temperance Boulter was baptized on 10 Nov 1785 in the Church of England parish church, St Margaret Lowestoft, Suffolk, England. She was the daughter of James and Ann Boulter[1].

First Marriage

Temperance, aged 22 years, married Frederick Mordaunt on 10 Sep 1808 in the Church of England parish church St James, Piccadilly, London, Westminster. The witnesses were James Boulter and Elizabeth Cavill[2]

Children

Temperance and Frederick may have had only one child (no other children are listed in baptismal records in Church of England parishes in England): Phebe Mordaunt, was born on 14 Jan 1818 in London and was baptized in the Church of England parish church of St Mary Newington in London on 15 Feb 1826[3]. Her father, Frederick Mordaunt was deceased[4]

Second Marriage

Temperance was widowed sometime before 1826 when her daughter Phoebe was baptized. Temperance (Boulter) Mordaunt married William Neale perhaps on 17 Jan 1830 after banns had been published on three consecutive Sundays from 27 Dec 1829 in the Church of England parish of Saint George The Martyr: Borough High Street, Southwark. Both were widowed and were of the parish[5]

Emigration to Van Diemen's Land

Temperance, aged 40 years, emigrated, together with her second husband, William Neale (aged 44 years, a baker) and daughter Phoebe Mordaunt to Van Diemen's Land on the Charles Kerr disembarking on 21 Nov 1835 in Launceston[6][7]. Temperance and William were free settlers who had paid for their passage (Phoebe their daughter had received a government bounty).

Death

Temperance Neale, a widow, relict of William Neale, died on 10 May 1875, aged 94 years, in the New Town, Hobart Orphan School Invalid Dept., of senility[8][9]. Temperance's husband William had died twenty five years' previously on 21 Mar 1850 in Launceston[10].

Research Notes

Temperance's birthdate has not been definitively ascertained. The record of her age of 40 years at the passenger list for the Charles Kerr in 1835 is in error (it places her birth about 1795). The record from her death notices has her aged 94 in 1875, making her birth date about 1781. Her baptism in 1785 is definitive. Her baptism may have been delayed for a few years. Alternatively her age at her death is incorrectly recorded. If her birth was indeed in 1785, she would have been aged 33 years when her daughter Phoebe was born in 1818. At her marriage to William Neale in 1830 she would have been aged 45, practically beyond normal childbearing.
