Biography

Joseph was born on 14 October 1749 and baptized the next day in Annapolis Royal.[1][2] He was the son of Sylvain Bourgeois and Anne Comeau.

Joseph lost his father when he was only 2 years of age. His mother was married around 1755 to Charles Mouton. In 1755 Joseph and his family were deported to the New England colonies. In 1763 his stepfather and his mother were recorded with four children on a list of exiled Acadians in New York. The children were not named but considering Joseph's age at the time. it is likely that he was counted with the children. His other siblings in the household were [3] He died on 16 August 1766 in the French Colony of Martinique.[4][5]

Research Notes

Gaudet (1906)[2] cites Joseph's date of birth in October 1749 and his sister Anne-Ester's being in January 1751 which is impossible because it is only a four month difference. It is assumed that one of these dates is incorrect.

It was written on the census of Acadians at Martinique that Anne COMMEAU's daughter Anne Esther BOURGEOIS died on 16 Aug 1766. However, "it is now known that this was incorrect and possibly referred instead to her brother" Joseph. Anne Esther was married to Joseph BLANCHARD, and were listed on the Acadian Coast census of 1777.
