Marie Emilie (later Melena) Bourgois was born in 1842 in Canada. She was the daughter of Médard Bourgeois and Petronille Brouillet. She immigrated to the United States in about 1854, settling in Kankakee County, Illinois.
Melena married Clement Chayer on 21 Mar 1879 in Kankakee County, Illinois. There were 10 known children born into this marriage.
Melena (Bourgeois) Chayer died at age 71 on 8 Feb 1914 in Kansas; she was buried in Mount Liberty Church Cemetery in Ottawa County, Kansas.
