Joseph Bourke DD was born in Ireland.

Joseph was born about 1740, the son of John Bourke and Mary Deane.

He was educated by Mr Davis and entered Trinity College, Dublin on 8 June 1751, aged 15. He graduated B.A. (unrecorded); M.A. in 1758; D.D. in 1773 [1].

He was an Irish peer and Bishop who held high offices in the Church of Ireland. Some of his appointments were Prebendary of Armagh (1760–1768); Dean of Killaloe (1768–1772) and Rector of Kilskyre, near Kells, County Meath (1769–1772); and Dean of Dromore (1772).

Joseph married Elizabeth Meade (daughter of Sir Richard Meade, 3rd Bt. and Catherine Prittie) in 1760.

They had at least 11 children:

  8. George Theobald Bourke (b. 15 Apr 1776, d. 22 Dec 1847)
  9. Louisa Bourke (b. circa 1778, d. 14 Jan 1855)
  10. Theodosia Eleanor Bourke (b. circa 1781, d. 23 Aug 1845)
  11. Mary Anne Bourke (b. 1783, d. 24 Mar 1830)

He was nominated the Bishop of Ferns and Leighlin on 7 September 1772 and appointed by letters patent on 19 September 1772.

Joseph was consecrated at St. Thomas's Church, Dublin on 11 October 1772; the principal consecrator was John Cradock, Archbishop of Dublin, and the principal co-consecrators were Charles Jackson, Bishop of Kildare and William Newcome, Bishop of Dromore. Ten years later, he was translated to the Archbishopric of Tuam by letters patent on 8 August 1782.

Upon the death of his brother John in 1792, he succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Mayo.

He passed away in 1794 at the age of about 58 and was interred in the burying ground of his family near Naas, County Kildare.
