Biography

Rosamond was born in 1818. She was the daughter of William Thomas Bourne and Mary JOHNSONE. In our family records, the last name is JOHNSTONE and she named her son John JOHNSTONE Hale (my great-grandfather) and her grandson is Joe JOHNSTONE Hale (my great-uncle). Joe JOHNSTONE Hale lived on our ranch with my family in Gisela, Gila, Arizona for 30 years. He knew I was the family genealogist so told me many times how to spell his name so it would be correct. Some others on Ancestry and Wikitree use Johnston or Johnson. In fact, I have met cousins who used the Johnston and Johnson spellings. Different family lines used different spellings, as we see all the time.

On 9 Jan 1834, Rosamond Bourne married Stephen M. Hale/Hail/Haile. They had 10 kids. - Family records of Jayne Peace Pyle & Virginia, U.S., Compiled Marriages, 1740-1850

DEATH RECORD: Cannot find a death certificate. She is on the 1880 census of Erath County, Texas, taken 23 June 1880, so she did not die in 1870 as many have recorded as her death date, but she is not seen again on a legal document, so all I can say is she died AFTER June 1880. Or the census record is wrong. - Jayne Peace Pyle

The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, 1847-2011 has Rosamond's death date as 18 Jul 1871, USA, BUT she is listed on the 1880 census of Erath Co Texas with her husband and daughter. Did the census taker in 1880 make a mistake? Or did the census taker simply write down who he/she thought lived there? It happens a lot. I worked for the US Census Bureau, so I know they often take short cuts.
