Gilbert Bourne was born about 1506, son of Philip Bourne of Worcestershire. One source has him as the brother, or nephew, of Sir John Bourne, principal Secretary of State under Queen Mary, while the more current thinking is that Gilbert was a cousin, rather than the brother, of John Bourne.
Gilbert became a student at university in Worcester in 1524 and a fellow of All Souls College in 1531. Deemed a "good orator and disputant," he earned a Bachelor of Divinity, and served the Catholic Church during the reign of Queen Mary. He was Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral and in 1549, became Bishop of Bath and Wells. When Queen Elizabeth succeeded, Gilbert was deprived of his bishopric for denying her supremacy. Gilbert Bourne died at Silverton, Devon, England 10 Sep 1569.
