Biography

Joseph Edward was born on 4 August 1888 at Queensland, Australia, the son of George Thomas Bourne and Elizabeth Lynch.

During his childhood his family lived in Townson, Queensland and he attended Townson's provisional school after it opened in 1895.

From The Brisbane Courier dated 19 September 1901, Pg 7 - LAIDLEY POLICE COURT. At the Laidley Police Court to-day, before Mr. H. T. Macfarlane, P. M., Alfred Bourne and Joseph Bourne were charged with wilful damage to bridles belonging to George Hodges, Thomas Clarke, and Charles Johnson. The charges against Alfred Bourne were withdrawn in each case, but Joseph, who pleaded guilty in all three cases, was fined 2s. 6d. damages, and 8s. 6d. costs, in respect of the first charge, 2s. damages and 8s. 6d. costs in respect of the second charge, and a like amount for the third offence. The money was paid.

In the 1913 electoral roll Joseph and brother Francis Herbert Bourne were both living at Greenmount, Queensland and working as tinsmiths.

From The Brisbane Courier dated 14 August 1917, Pg 5 - Toowoomba, August 13. Mr. Joseph Edward Bourne (Toowoomba) was accepted for active service today.

Joseph Edward Bourne joined the Australian Imperial Force [WWI], Regimental No. 21287. He enlisted for service abroad and attested on 13 August 1917 at Toowoomba. Personal information from his war records state Joseph was born near Laidley. He was then aged 28 years and employed as a plumber. He had completed a 5 year apprenticeship with O’Brian and Fitzpatrick, Toowoomba. Although not married he stated he was the sole support of his mother Elizabeth Bourne, of James St, Toowoomba, and his 10 year old brother. Joseph was said to be 5 feet, 8 ¼ inches in height and weighed 132 pounds. He had a fresh complexion, grey eyes and black hair. Religion was Roman Catholic.

Joseph was posted to No. 1 Depot Company, Enoggera Camp [QLD] from 23 August to 10 October 1917. Within this time he was admitted to hospital for 15 days with parotitis [an inflammation of one or both parotid glands, the major salivary glands located on either side of the face].

Joseph was appointed to Engineer Reinforcements, 2nd Military District, as a sapper on 16 October 1917. He completed his training at the Engineering Depot, Moore Park, Sydney. He also attended No. 5 Equitation School at Roseville, presumably for practice in horse riding skills.

Joseph was then posted to November Reinforcements 1st Field Squadron Engineers [he was attached to the ANZAC Mounted Division] and left Australia aboard RMS Ormonde, sailing from Sydney on 2 March 1918. He disembarked on 4 April at Suez. That day he went to the Reinforcements Camp at Moascar. On 8 April Joseph was admitted to 2nd Australian Stationery Hospital with measles. He was discharged on 22 April with no complications. From 19 May to 29 May Joseph joined the Engineering Training Unit [for Ludd details] and was then posted to 2nd Field Squadron.

On 17 June 1918 Joseph was admitted to the ANZAC Receiving Station and the following day moved to the 66th Casualty Clearing Station. From 20 June to 23 June he was at 47 Stationary Hospital, Gaza and then from 23 June to 25 June at 24 Stationery Hospital, Kantara. He was finally admitted to 14 Australian General Hospital, Port Said on 25 June. He was diagnosed with malaria [benign tertian]. A medical report dated 6 March 1919 stated Joseph was at Jordan Valley when he became ill. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANZAC_Mounted_Division and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupation_of_the_Jordan_Valley for further information.

Joseph was released from hospital on 25 July and sent to a Rest Camp in Moascar. He returned to 2nd Field Squadron on 12 August. Joseph had several recurrences of malaria, being readmitted to 14 AGH, Abbassia, Cairo from 27 Dec 1918 to 17 January 1919 and again from 8 February. At this time it was recommended he be returned to Australia.

Joseph embarked HT Euripidis at Kantara on 15 March 1919. He spent 2 days in the ship’s hospital on his return trip. The ship arrived in Australia on 1 May 1919.

A Medical Report dated 20 May 1919 stated Joseph was 100% incapacitated for work at that time but it was estimated there would be a 75% improvement in 6 months.

Joseph was discharged on 4 June 1919. He was issued with the Star, British War Medal and Victory medals.

In the 1930 and 1933 electoral rolls Joseph was shown as living at 30 Consett St, Dulwich Hill, Sydney. He was working as a plumber. In the 1936 and 1937 rolls Joseph was at 35 Hercules St, Dulwich Hill, still working as a plumber. And in 1943 he was at Bathurst Hotel, Darling Harbour and working as a fitter.

27th August 1946. Estate sworn at £784.13.11. net

In the 1930, 1933, 1936 and 1937 electoral rolls Leila Emma Jones was living at 30 Consett St. Then she and husband John Frederick Jones, a chief steward, were living at 65 [sic] Hercules St in 1943 and at 447 New Canterbury Rd in 1949. John didn't appear in the earlier rolls, he was possibly away at sea. It would appear Joseph probably boarded with this family over a number of years.
