Biography

The father of Joseph Bourne lived at the Abbey Farm, near Milton. As well as being a farmer he carried on the wheelwrighting and timber trades. He was a man if industry and frugality and was prudent in the management of his businesses... which enabled him to place his children in farms or in trades level with the respectable yeomen of the neighbourhood. (Walford, 1854, p1)

Joseph married Ellen Steele, daughter of a farmer from Hatchley, near Cheadle. About this time new industry and science in the Staffordshire potteries was inducing many to become travellers selling the earthenware. Joseph and Ellen took this trade, travelling to Greenock in Scotland to travel door to door selling pots. During his time in Scotland, it is suggested that Joseph found a liking for string drink, which along with a violent temper, beset his life.

After the birth of their first two children, both sons, they returned to Abbey Farm and before long moved to their own farm at Ford Hay in Stoke on Trent parish of Staffordshire. Like his father, Joseph took up the trades of wheelwrighting and timber dealer. Six further children were born to the family, three boys and three girls. (Walford, 1854, p2)

Joseph lived at Ford-Hay farm for 22 years, after which he moved to a farm at Bemersley, Norton-in-the-moors, Staffordshire where he lived until a few months before his 100th birthday. (Walford, 1854, p9)
