Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Mary (Bourquin) McKnight was a Georgia colonist.

Mary was born about 1735.[Birth date is estimated based on grandchildren in 1799.] According to a division of the estate of Benedict Bourquin, Mary Ann McKnight, was one of the legatees and referred to as Mary Ann McKnight of said county of Chatham Widow late Mary Ann Bourquin late daughter of the said Benedict Bourquin. [1] The document also documented her mother was Jane Judith Bourquin.

The family migrated from South Carolina to Georgia by 1749 where Benedict Bourquin settled on land on the south branch of Little Ogechee River.[2]

Mary Ann Bourquin married one McKnight.[source needed]

Her father died in September 1770. A misunderstanding concerning the property of the late Benedict Bourquin recorded on 4th April 1800 stated that "whereas Benedict Bourquin the elder of the county aforesaid Planter died Intestate in Sept 1770 leaving a widow several children and also a considerable personal estate..."[3]

She passed away before Feb 1807. Mary Ann McKnight wrote her Last Will and Testament on the 26th of Sept 1805 and it was recorded on the 5th of Feb 1807 naming three of her grandchildren, Isaac Young, Benedict Young, and Nancy Young as legatees.[4] Daughter, Mary Young, was the mother of the children named in the will. The wording of the will asserted that the three siblings were living with or were to live with Mary E. Allen who was a legatee on "the conditions that the said Allen charges the above children no rent nor brings no debts against the Estate otherwise the said Allen to have no part in the Estate."[5] George W. Allen qualified as the Executor of the Estate of Mary Ann McKnight.
