Jean Nicholas was baptized October 22, 1731, the son of Jean Georges Boutilier and Sarah Grange of Etoban, in the Montbéliard region of what is now France [1][2].
On May 30, 1752, he emigrated to Nova Scotia with his family. By the time the ship arrived in Halifax in September 1752, his parent had died, and the six children are listed as as orphans on the Halifax victualing lists, and then the appear in the vicualling lists for the 'Foreign Protestants' who founded Lunenburg township in 1753[2]
On May 3, 1757, Nicholas Boutelier married Anne Judith Mettin, a stepdaughter of Jacques Bouteillier[2][3]. Their children included:
George, baptized April 27, 1758[3], who died young[2]
Catherine baptized July 3, 1761[3], who married Leopold-Frederic Langille[2]
Mary Elizabeth, baptized October 29, 1769[3], who married John Oikle[2]
Jean George, baptized September 7, 1765[3], nicknamed "Coolah", who married Anna Barbara Clattenburg[2]
George Frederick, baptized August 26, 1767[3], also nicknamed "Coolah", who married Mary Catherine Knickle[2]
Several of his sons were nicknamed "Coolah", derived from their father's name Nicholas[2]
Jean Nicholas Boutilier died December 17, 1799 at Mush-a-Mush[3][2], and was buried at Hillcrest Cemetery in Lunenburg[4]
