Biography

Cross of St George
Charlotte (Bovett) Ridge was born in England.

Charlotte Blackmore Bovett was born to Charles Walter Bovett and Hephzibah (Murch) Bovett on 29 September 1865 in Ottery St Mary, Devon, England. [1] (Blackmore was her paternal grandmother's maiden name; giving the grandmother's maiden name was a custom quite frequently apparent in this part of the country.) She was the third of eleven children: seven of them girls. Her father, Charles, was a master baker and had a shop in the High Street of Honiton, Devon, where he worked for over twenty years.

Charlotte first appears in Yonder Street, Ottery St Mary age 6. [2] She is living with her family and Charles's apprentice, Charlotte's cousin Frederick Norrington. However, she then disappears from the censuses for 1881 and 1891, and ends up getting married - in America!

Charlotte married Hubert Ridge on 12 September 1892 in Dalton, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, USA. [3] [4] (Two of her younger sisters were also married there.) The couple's first child was born in the same place: James Ernest in 1894. Then they may have moved, because their second child, Charles Mead, was born in 1895 in New York. Some time afterwards, Hubert (working as a plumber) and Charlotte returned to Devon, where their next four children were born: Walter, Effie, Edward, and Ivy. Walter and Edward died as infants; Effie was named after her maternal grandmother who, despite being baptised Hephzibah, was known as 'Effie'.

Charlotte and Hubert moved again, this time to Bargoed in Glamorgan, Wales, where their last four children were born: Annie, Hubert, Robert, and another Edward. [5]

Both Charlotte and Hubert were to die in Bargoed; Charlotte on 15 February 1933, [6] and Hubert ten months later on 1 April 1934. [7]
