Hannah Fanny Bowden is born on May 28, 1888 in Stroud, New South Wales, Australia, the daughter of John Robert Bowden (1864-1955) and Sarah Elizabeth Nix (1869-1943). Stroud is about 50 kilometres inland from Port Stephens.

Hannah marries James Newton on March 17, 1916 in Port Macquarie, NSW. James Newton (1883-1969) also was born in Stroud. Port Macquarie is 187 kilometres north of Stroud.
