John was born[1][2]on 11 December 1879 to John Bowen and Mary Bowen) in the registration district of Llanelly, Carmarthenshire, Wales, United Kingdom.
The April 1881 census[3]shows John living with his mother Mary Bowen), a Tin Worker's wife in Union Buildings, Llanelly, Carmarthenshire.
The April 1891 census[4]shows John, with his father John Bowen, a Doubler at the Tin Plate Works, mother Mary Bowen), sisters Mary, a Scholar and Margaret and brothers Sydney, David and Thomas who all attend school, living in Bryncaerau Terrace, Borough, Llanelly, Carmarthenshire. John attends school.
The March 1901 census[5]shows John, with his father John Bowen, a Rollerman at the Tin Plate Works, mother Mary Bowen), sisters Margaret and Gertrude and brothers Sydney, a Riser at the Tin Plate Works, David, a Greaser at the Tin Plate Works and Thomas, living in Amos Street, Borough, Llanelly, Carmarthenshire. John works as a Riser at the Tin Plate Works.
John married[6][7]Sybil Bowen, who may well have been pregnant at the time, during the second quarter of 1906 in the registration district of Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales.
The couple's first child Mervyn, was born[8]during the fourth quarter of 1906. Unfortunately, he passed away[9]during the same quarter with both birth and death registrations made within the district of Bedwellty, Monmouthshire, Wales. However, during the second quarter of 1908 the couple celebrated the birth of[10]Phyllis Bowen in the registration district of Bedwellty, Monmouthshire.
The April 1911 census[11]shows John, with his wife of five years, Sybil Bowen, daughter Phyllis Waterman, mother in law Anne David, sister in law Eva Simpson and boarder Clifford Jennings, a Grocer's Assistant, living in an eight roomed property in Alexandra Street, Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire. John worked as a Grocer's Manager. All the occupants, except Phyllis Waterman and Clifford Jennings spoke both Welsh and English.
His wife, Sybil Bowen, passed away[12]aged thirty three during the fourth quarter of 1913 in the registration district of Cardiff, Glamorgan.
John, a widower, married[13][14][15][16]Susan Gallagher, a widow on 14 November 1917 at St John, Canton, Cardiff, Glamorgan. At the time of the wedding the couple were co-habiting in Pembroke Road, Canton and John's occupation was a Shop Manager.
Sometime between their wedding day and October 1935 the couple made the decision to move one hundred and thirty miles west[17]where the Pembrokeshire Electoral Roll Register shows John residing in Laws Street, Pembroke, Pembrokeshire with his wife Susannah.
The September 1939 register[18]shows John, with his wife, Susanna, daughter Phyllis Waterman and grandsons Alexander Waterman and Albert Waterman, living in Laws Street, Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire. John works as a Hotel Keeper of The Three Crowns Inn.
Sadly, John lost his life, at the age of sixty five, as a civilian casualty[19][20][21]during an air raid[22]in the County Hospital, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire on 1 May 1945, after sustaining injuries the day before. John was laid to rest[23][24]a few days later on 5 May 1945 in Section S, Grave Number 64 at Llanion Cemetery, Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire. His probate[25]was administered three and a half months later on 24 August 1945 in Llandudno, Caernarfonshire detailing effects of £775 19s 0d to his widow, Susannah Bowen.
