Obituary of Martha Ann Bowen HENRY COUNTY WEEKLY, NOVEMBER 24, 1893. "Shocking Suicide. Miss Martha A. Bowen by her own hand ends her existence. A shocking and unaccountable suicide occurred near Whitehouse in this county last Sat which ended the earthly existence of Miss Martha A. Bowen. No reason for such a rash act existed or was even suspicioned and consequently the shock to both her loved ones and acquaintences came as a terrible thunderbolt. Miss Martha lived at the old Bowen homestead with other members of the family and all the peaceable and affectionate relations of the home circle and not as much as a shadow of the awful calamity hanging over them appeared until it fell in crushing reality upon them. About 10 o'clock last Sat morning Miss Martha left the house quietly informing her sister that she was going over to Mrs. Weatherford's and might remain over until the next morning. The distance to Mrs. Weatherford's is about a mile the way leading through a field. Upon the arrival of her brother at 10 o'clock he became a little uneasy about her departure at that time of day and went out to see after her. To his horror his premonition proved only too true. About midway the field he came across the prostate form of his sister cold in death. At once the evidence was plain that she had met the suicide fate; by her side lay a razor with which the awful work was evidently done. No tracks, marks or scuffle or anything whatever to indicate foul play. It was simply the quiet determination of an unfortunate suicide. THe body was tenderly conveyed to the residence where it received proper attention from those to whom she was most dear. Further details are useless. In their sorrow the stricken family have the sympathy of all friends. Coroner Pritchett was summoned and after a thorough investigation the jury rendered a verdict of death at her own hand resulting from cutting the throat with a razor."
