Bert Bowen registered for the World War I draft when he was 28, registering in Flint, Michigan on June 5, 1917.[4] He stated that he lived with his wife and children at 1435 W. 3rd Avenue in Flint, Michigan and that he worked in axle assembly for Mason Motor Car Company. He was described as a tall, slender man with brown hair and blue eyes. He did not enlist.
By 1920, Bert and his family lived in Detroit, Michigan,[5] where Bert worked as a steam shovel engineer.[6]
Bert registered for the World War II draft, registering in Detroit, Michigan on April 24, 1942, at the age of 53.[7] He stated that he lived at 16840 Telegraph Road in Detroit and was described as 6'2½" tall and 173 pounds. It was that Bert was missing the middle finger of his left hand. He did not enlist, residing by 1950 with his wife at 25019 Power Street in Detroit,[8] At the time, Bert worked as a motor mechanic at an automobile plant.
