Rebecca Bowen was born about 1825 in N.Y. She is the Daughter of John Bowen, born in Maine and Sylvia Rose, born in Vermont. [1] [2]

First marriage: Daniel L Tuttle, gunsmith, born in New Jersey.
Place: Eaton, Michigan. Date 26 April 1846.[3]
Residence 1850: Rockford, Illinois
Daughters born in Illinois: Frances Tuttle born about 1848, Ida T Tuttle, born 1850. [4] and Elma Tuttle born in 1851. [5]

Second marriage: Seth Viele, carpenter, born in New York.
Place: Rock County, Wisconsin (about 30 miles from Rockford, Illinois)
Date: 6 April 1854. [2]
Residence 1860: Saint Charles Township, Floyd County, Iowa [5]
Rebecca and Seth had one daughter, Maretta or Margaretta, born about 1862.[6]

Third marriage: Harvey Kellogg, Esq.
Place: Floyd County, Iowa. Date: August 24, 1863. [7]

In 1863 Rebecca - Mrs Harvey Kellogg - fulfilled the office of treasurer of the Ladies' Union League, whose 60 members spent Saturdays "making articles necessary for the comfort of ...soldiers, such as quilts, stockings, lint, bandages, &c." [8] [9]

At the end of the year 1863 Harvey Kellogg published the following notice in the newspaper:

"Whereas Rebecca, my wife, has left my bed and board without just cause or provocation, this notice is to forbid, and I do hereby forbid all persons harboring or trusting her on my account, as I shall not be responsible for nor pay any debts of her contracting after this date. signed Harvey Kellog, Dec 26, 1863." [10]

Rebecca's husband died suddenly about two years later, in September 1865, after suffering briefly from stomach pain. [11] [12] [13]

In 1870 Rebecca was living alone with two of her daughters, Frances, age 25 and Margaretta, age 9. Her other daughter, Ida, was "adopted" by Frank Wheat and Lydia (Richmond) Wheat of Charles City, Iowa.

Rebecca Kellogg remained a widow in Charles City for years to come, until her death in 1915. [14] [15]

Research Notes

Marriage index for Rebecca and Seth cites her parents as John Brown and Silva Brown; Rebecca's 1880 census record cites her father's birthplace as Maine, her mother's birthplace as Vermont; Rebecca's first marriage took place in Eaton, Michigan in 1846. It turns out John Bowen, born in Maine and Sylvia Rose, born in Vermont, moved to Eaton, Michigan prior to 1840. The 1840 census does not name household members, but there is a female Rebecca's age in the household.
