Biography

John was born in 1817 at Canterbury, Kent, England, the son of Thomas Bowen (a stone mason) and Maria Bowen.

On the 4th March 1838, John Bowen, stone mason married Mary Ann Dennis at The Superintendent Registrar's Office, Canterbury, Kent, England[1][2]

He passed away aged 69 years on the 16th February 1888[3] at High Street, Margate, Kent, England[4].

Research Notes

There was another John baptised on the 18th October 1817 at Saint Margaret, Canterbury, Kent, England, the son of James Bowen (fishmonger) and Martha Bowen of St. Margaret's Street, Canterbury[16] but in 1841, he was living with his widowed mother Martha.

Thomas Bowen was also a Stonemason. It is likely that John's marriage certificate would name his father as Thomas Bowen, but as John married Mary Ann at Superintendent Registrar's Office, there is no copy online as it was not in an Anglican church.
