Biography

Charlotte was the daughter of Robert Bower and his wife Helen. She was baptised at Norton, North Riding, Yorkshire on 11 March 1837.[1]

The 1841 census lists Charlotte at Norton, Yorkshire, age 3.[2] The 1851 census lists her there, age 14, born Norton. Father; Robert Bower, 52, born Ipswich, Suffolk. Mother: Helen, 54, born Scarborough, Yorkshire. Siblings, all born at Norton: Robert H, 18; Lucy M, 17; Leonard W, 10.[3]

On 15 November 1859 Charlotte married Digby Cayley at Norton.[4] They had the following children:

  • Helen Dora, baptised at Norton, Yorkshire on 31 August 1860[5]
  • Julia Philadelphia, baptised at Norton on 21 July 1861[6]
  • Beatrice Mary Eugenia, baptised at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire on 24 August 1862, with her birth date given as 22 July 1862[7]
  • Alice Erica, baptised at Brompton by Sawdon on 5 September 1863[8]
  • Digby Leonard Arthur, baptised at Brompton by Sawdon on 29 October 1864[9]
  • George Cuthbert, baptised at Brompton by Sawdon on 30 September 1866[10]
  • Valentine Charles Hugh, baptised at Brompton by Sawdon on 14 September 1868[11]
  • Catherine Eleanor Millicent, baptised at Brompton by Sawdon on 20 July 1869[12]
  • Robert Edward Cornelius, baptised at Brompton by Sawdon on 23 October 1870 with his birth date given as 22 October 1870[13]
  • Mary Caroline Charlotte, baptised at Brompton by Sawdon on 9 July 1872[14]
  • Harry Francis, baptised at Scarborough, Yorkshire on 29 July 1873[15]
  • Lucy Violet, baptised at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire, on 23 April 1876[16]
  • Herbert, baptised at New Malton, Yorkshire, England on 20 November 1874[17]

The 1871 census lists Charlotte at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire, age 33.[20] The 1881 census lists her there, age 43, born Norton, Yorkshire.[21]

The 1891 census lists Charlotte at Norton, Yorkshire, age 54.[22] The 1901 census lists her there, age 63.[23]

Probate was granted on Charlotte's estate on 1 November 1907, with her death date given as 6 August 1901.She passed away in 1901.[24] Her death was registered in Malton, Yorkshire in the 3rd quarter of 1901.[25]
