Anna M. Bower was born in 1856 in Ohio [1]. Anna was the fifth child of Jacob Bower and Susanah B. Bryan. In 1860, Anna’s family lived on a farm in Salem, Knox county, Illinois [1]. Anna was listed as five years old. Sometime between 1862, when Anna’s brother Quintilus was born, and 1870 Anna’s mother Susanah B. Bryan died and the family relocated to Pilot Grove township, Hancock county, Illinois [2]. Anna was fourteen years old that year. Later in the year her father married Matilda Votaw, formerly Ford. At the time of the next census, Anna was no longer listed with her father and her mother had passed away. It is unknown if Anna died or was married with a different last name.
