Biography

Stephen A. Bower,[1][2] son of David Bower Junior and wife, Susannah Stayner,[3] was born Oct 29 1861 in Ohio.[1][2] He grew to manhood on his parents farm.[4]

He was married Sep 30 1885 to Olive F Swartz in Wyandot County.[5] They were the parents of three children:

  1. Virgil Avery
  2. Orvil A
  3. Stella F

Stephen supported his family by farming. In 1900, he owned his farm, free from mortgage. His father-in-law, Jacob A Swartz, age 77, a widower, lived with his family.[6]

By 1910, Stephen had given up farming, and was working as a salesman for implements. They were living in town, renting a house at 530 South Sandusky Ave., Upper Sandusky, Ohio. His father-in-law is no longer in the household, and the oldest son has moved out. [7]

Sometime prior to 1920, the family moved to Hood River County, Oregon, where they lived in Center Precinct on a mortgaged fruit farm. Their daughter Stella is single, living with them. Their son Orval has moved out, and their son, Virgil, now a widower, and his three children are living with them.[8]

Stephen's wife, Olive died in 1926.[3] The 1930 census shows him living in Barrett Precinct, Hood River County, Oregon. He owned a house on Multnomah Way valued at $6,300. They have a radio. His daughter and son-in-law, Stella and J. W. Kingsley, along with their daughter and granddaughter were living with him.[9]

Before 1935, the family moved back to Wyandot County, Ohio. The 1940 census shows them living on a farm in a rented house valued at $10. The family head is Stephen's son-in-law, Wylie Kinsley. Also living here is his daughter, Stella Kinsley, and their 11-year-old daughter, Frances, born in Oregon. Stephen is no longer able to work. Stephen had completed the 8th grade of elementary school.[10]

Stephen died Thursday, Aug 6 1940,[1][11] at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wylie Kinsley, south of Upper Sandusky, following a week's serious illness. Services were held Saturday, at 3 at the Bringman & Co. funeral home. Rev. R. B. Coleman, pastor of John Stewart Methodist Church was in charge. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. Three children survive him.[3][12]
